D-subminiature or D-sub (d-sub, d sub, dsub, sub d) connectors are sturdy electrical connectors having a plated steel shell with a mating face shaped like the letter D. The trapezoidal "D" shape provides polarisation as male and female connectors can only mate one way round. Shells are normally plated with nickel, tin or RoHS compliant Trivalent Chromium zinc. To meet the requirements of FCC Docket 20780, VDE NORM 0871 and BS6527 the mated connector shells need to make positive electrical contact. This is achieved by grounding indents on the plug shells and by plating the shells with bright tin. Male connectors have male contacts and plug into receptacles, jacks, and outlets. Female connectors contain socket contacts. D-subminiature connectors are available in five standard shell sizes: 9, 15, 25, 37 and 50 way. The dimensions of d-subminiature connectors are generally in accordance with DIN 41652, BS9523 F0018 and MIL-C-24308; because of this they are compatible and interchangeable across manufacturers. The contact pitch or distance between pins in a standard size connector is generally 2.77mm with 2.54mm or 2.84mm between rows dependant upon whether it's a US or European PCB board 'footprint'. D-sub connectors are available with solder bucket, straight PC, right angled PC, IDC, surface mount or wire wrap terminations and can be fitted with a range of board locks, female jackposts, etc. The application will normally dictate the use of either precision screw machined or stamped and formed contacts with gold plating over nickel finish. Insulators are generally polyester with UL rated self extinguishing properties. High-density, 15 (VGA), 26, 44, 62 and 78 way and double-density pin arrangements are stocked in depth. Combination connectors reduce the number of regular pins to accommodate larger coaxial, high current or high voltage contacts.
