ept's Colibri® connector is a 2-row x 0.5mm, shielded, two piece, robust and flexible SMT stacking interconnect system designed for parallel board to board stacking application. An arrangement of 196 signal contacts and 24 shield contacts with a pitch of 0.5 mm ensures maximum contact density in a highly compact space. A dual model is available with 440 contacts.
SMT grounding clips make it possible to position connectors on circuit boards as precisely as possible. Both the receptacle and the plug have surfaces that are suitable for automatic processing. There is also the option to equip the plugs with pick-caps to facilitate assembly. Furthermore, tape and reel packaging guarantees an optimal process for automatic assembly.
The Colibri receptacle is attached to the COM module and the plug is situated on the carrier board. Surface Mount Technology for high speed pick and place of a high speed communications connector!

Both connectors, Plug and Receptacle, are available with 8 mm stacking height and 220 or 440 pins. They are designed to meet requirements according to specifications not only of PICMG COM Express®, but also of SFF-SIG Core Express® X86, PCIx Gen 3, 10G Ethernet (10G Base-KR) and nanoETXexpress. The plug connector has a ground shield for use on carrier boards and the receptacle connector for use on COM modules has ground pins. Completely new is a 440-pin version, in which two 220-pin Colibri ® connectors are held together by a mounting frame. The mounting frame guarantees an exact positioning of the two components to COM Express specifications, arranged according to PICMG® COM.0 and will be removed after soldering.

The 3.0 release of the successful COM Express computer-on-module standard includes a new pinout type. This enables a faster data transfer rate of up to 10 Gbps, thereby expanding the applicability of COM Express in terms of server applications. Of course, the PCB connectors required to connect the baseboard and the COM module need to meet these increased requirements.
Unlike the type 6 pinout, the new type 7 pinout does not include any audio or video interfaces. As such, it does not represent a substitute for type 6; instead, it expands the range of COM Express applications in terms of server applications. The audio and video interfaces on the previous pinout type have been replaced with four 10 GB Ethernet KR lanes and 32 PCI Express lanes to increase the data transfer rate. These new features are relevant for use in video on demand in the telecom segment, for example, as well as medical or security technology applications.

These areas of application require reliable PCB connectors, which are essential for securely connecting the baseboard with the COM module and guaranteeing high data transfer rates of up to 10 Gbps. Colibri® connectors from ept are perfectly suited for achieving these high data transfer rates – they feature optimized contact design and deliver first-rate signal integrity, even at 10 Gbps and higher. They are therefore ideally suited for PCI Express Gen3 applications with 8 Gbps or 10 Gbps Ethernet (10GBase-KR); the pinout type 7, among other features, is designed for this. S-parameters are available on request from ept for use in simulating your proprietary designs.

Colibri® products are compatible with all popular connector systems on the market. This has been proven by signal integrity tests carried out by the Fraunhofer Institute. The testers compared Colibri® connectors to other COM Express connectors and also tested the two connector types in combination, achieving excellent results in each scenario.

All versions of the Colibri® high-speed connectors with a pitch of 0.5 mm are now also available with the pin counts 40, 80, 120, 160, and 200.
The original pin count versions, 220 and 440, have already proven their merit in terms of performance and contact design in COM Express applications. Having five more pin count options to choose from now provides hardware developers with more opportunities to optimally adapt the heights and pin counts of the necessary board-to-board connections in keeping with the relevant high-speed application. The new Colibri connectors with 40 to 200 pins also feature optimized contact design that enables data transfer rates of up to 10 Gbps, as well as additional benefits. As such, they are ideal for PCI Express Gen3 applications with 8 Gbps or 10 Gbps Ethernet (10GBase-KR). S-parameters are available on request from ept for use in simulating your proprietary designs.The entire Colibri® connector series, including the new pin count options, impresses with extremely robust design and a high degree of versatility. All of the pin count options are available for a board-to-board distance of 5 or 8 mm, thereby guaranteeing maximum flexibility in designing circuit board connections. All Colibri connectors are shipped in tape-and-reel packaging, making fully automatic processing easier.

COM Express

A Computer On Module (COM) form factor, is a highly integrated and compact PC that can be used in a design application much like an integrated circuit component. Each COM Express Module integrates core CPU and memory functionality, the common I/O of a PC/AT, USB, audio, graphics (PEG), and Ethernet. All I/O signals are mapped to two high density, low profile connectors on the bottom side of the module.

CoreExpress

CoreExpress, an advanced Computer On Module (COM) specification, was developed to accommodate modern processors like the Intel® Atom™. However, it is not bound to Intel processors. Its tiny size and low power requirements make it the ideal base for small, battery-powered, and wearable embedded PC devices.
